Sister Marie Therese Hanna, who led the St. Catherine
of Sienna Dominican congregation in Mosul, Iraq, for 12 years, is visiting
Springfield to talk about life in war-torn Iraq. A reception for her will
be held at 7 p.m. today (Thursday, May 19) in the Aquinas Center at the
Dominican Motherhouse, 1237 W. Monroe St. Hanna was elected prioress in
1992; she completed her second term in July 2004 and is now on sabbatical.

CAHNMAN NAMED TO COUNCIL
Sam Cahnman, a Springfield attorney and one of four
Democrats on the 29-member Sangamon County Board, was appointed last week
to the Illinois Council on Responsible Fatherhood by Illinois House Speaker
Michael Madigan. The council was created by the Legislature to identify
obstacles to the positive involvement of responsible fathers in the lives
of their children, and to develop strategies to overcome those obstacles.
CONTEST DEADLINE NEARS
The deadline is near for an art and poetry contest
for central-Illinois students (third grade through high school). Any
drawing or painting (no larger than two feet by three feet) or poem (no
longer than 40 lines) highlighting the theme of racial unity and
understanding may be submitted. Eighteen winners, eligible for prizes of
$20 to $50, will be named, and winning entries will be published in Illinois Times. The deadline is

“66 ON 66” UPDATE
Doug Waterman is more than halfway to his goal of
biking the length of old Route 66 and is closing in on Springfield, where
his No. 1 cheerleader, son Ryan, resides. The 66-year-old retired
California teacher began his quest — which is serving, in part, as a
fundraiser for Habitat for Humanity — late last month [see Bob
Cavanagh, “Road trip,” April 28]. He’s expected to roll
into the capital city sometime next week.
