Frustrated that you are reliant on lyin’ reporters to fact-check assertions by our lyin’ politicians? Ever wonder how the pros decide whether a claim is mis-stated, misleading or downright false?

Guardian Reporter Mona Chalabi takes us through the process of fact-checking this recent claim by Donald Trump:

There are two Chicagos, as you know. One Chicago that is incredible, luxurious and safe. There is another Chicago that is worse than almost any of the places in the Middle East.

I won’t give away the ending, but I will note that along the way Chalabi checked to see if Chicago as a whole has the highest murder rate in the country, as Trump has alleged on other occasions. Her finding? It doesn’t. Compiled police data  shows that Chicago has the 12th highest homicide rate of any US city between 2011 and 2016 (the first three are Detroit, St Louis and New Orleans).
