CUT AT THE TOP
We all agree government spending is out of control (“DOGE cuts come to Springfield,” March 13). Eliminate the Department of Homeland Security and cut the Central Intelligence Agency’s budget. The Department of Defense can afford $1 billion less and still be the most powerful force on earth and provide quality health care and benefits to veterans.
We can identify hospital groups and pharmaceutical companies that defraud Medicare and Medicaid. We can implement zero-based budgeting, trim layers of management and find redundancy in agencies. We can find fraud and waste in federal contracts worth millions.
In a capitalistic society we all understand layoffs, but to terminate inexpensive, front-line employees that won’t produce long-term savings based on the false premise of poor performance (without review) is an insult to hard-working folks. We are all trying to put food on the table, not part of some deep state defrauding the government.
We are upset at some billionaire who hasn’t provided new ideas and protects his billion-dollar federal contracts, all under the cover of the federal agency directors and politicians who give themselves raises every year and retire with good health care for life on our tax dollars.

NO CHOICE
The government is going broke, thanks to the Democrats. We really have no other choice but to cut jobs and wasteful spending in order to balance the budget.

THANKS FOR SERVICE
Mr. Tom Davis has been a huge asset to the Massey Commission. His public participation is inspiring and very helpful (“Massey Commission grapples with the issues,” March 6).

TAKE IT SERIOUSLY
This is a heinous crime and, even though the perpetrator is a kid still, he should be prosecuted as such (“Charges increased for teen driver,” March 20). Did everyone already forget a similar thing happened to Dusty Rhodes and her dog? This is becoming a pattern of teen behavior. Springfield needs to start protecting its pedestrians and their pets and rewarding safe and conscientious teen drivers.
