ANOTHER MYSTERY
Just to add to the mystery regarding the World War I Memorial for Sangamon
County Veterans, there was once a huge plaque with the listing of all the Sangamon
County Veterans who served during World War I in Springfield [Job Conger, “An
interesting and mysterious void,” Dec. 4]. The plaque was moved and was never
seen again. I have had several contacts in this office regarding where this
memorial is, but the last place that it was tracked down to was the fairgrounds.
To this day nobody has come forth with the location of this memorial. I am glad
to see that the World War I veterans are now being recognized but this is not
the first time.

PETE AND MR. JONES
I want to thank Pete Sherman for his very interesting and informative article,
“Mr. Jones Delivers” [Dec. 4]. Senate President Jones’s statements on his desire
for education funding reform give me great optimism as we head into the new
state legislative session. I also want to thank Sen. [Larry] Bomke for his willingness
to work with the Democratic leaders to get things done for the betterment of
the state. Again, great article.

FUTURE SHOCK
When did our schools become prison camps? With each passing day, there are
more school lockdowns, with commando-style raids on our children and police
doing sweeps of the halls with their guns drawn and attack dogs at their side.
How much longer will it be before a child is hurt or killed by the actions of
law enforcement? Our kids are forced into mandatory drug tests, but not tested
for alcohol. Why is this? Our children are students not prisoners! Why have
the states gone to such great lengths to treat our children as prisoners and
our schools as prisons? Could it be that the U.S. holds the highest incarceration
rate in the world, and they are preparing our kids for their future?

CORRECTION
The Trap-Neuter-Return program administers rabies vaccinations to feral cats
that are captured and spayed or neutered. Incorrect information was included
in last week’s cover story about the program [“Hello, Kitty!” Nov. 27]. Illinois
Times regrets the error.
