Hansel and Gretel munched on a house made of
gingerbread, and the outcome wasn’t so good for the occupant. This
Friday, like the fairy-tale siblings, Springfieldians get the opportunity
to eat sweets, but the result should make a few future homeowners quite
happy.
Habitat for Humanity-Sangamon County’s third
“Desserts & Dreams” fundraiser gives guests a chance to
sample signature desserts made by some of the community’s top chefs
and bakers.
The event, to be held at the Hoogland Center for the
Arts at 8 p.m. Friday, May 13, features local celebrities who will be
serving up the desserts, as well as local entertainers.
WICS (Channel 20) anchor Jerry Lambert reads works by
poet Langston Hughes, Illinois Times publisher Sharon Whalen and Chamber of Commerce
president Gary Plummer wait on guests, and reporter Kavitha Cardoza of WUIS
(91.9 FM) serves as mistress of ceremonies. The Pleasant Grove Baptist
Gospel Choir performs.
The donation for “Desserts & Dreams”
is $15 (tables for eight individuals are $75). Although some tickets will
be available at the door, Habitat encourages people to buy tickets before
the event.
“Desserts & Dreams” is part of a
three-day celebration highlighting the organization’s new offices and
ReStore, Habitat’s building-materials thrift store, at 320 N. Dirksen
Parkway. A grand opening for the office will be held at 4:30 p.m. today
(Thursday, May 12) followed by a potluck dinner at 5:30 p.m.
On Saturday, guests may visit ReStore between 9 a.m.
and 3 p.m. Hot dogs and other food will be available between 11 a.m. and 1
p.m.
Habitat is a nonprofit church-supported organization
that provides low-cost homes with the assistance of volunteers and sweat
equity from future occupants.
Habitat recently started construction on five homes
and plans to build another 19 in the next three years.
The organization, which has operated here for 16
years, has moved several times, but its Dirksen location is the first
headquarters it has owned.
