For my high school newspaper, I wrote a column titled “What in the World?” in which I earnestly parroted what I’d read about global affairs in The New Republic. Later in my career, though still young, I became an editorial writer, from which post I regularly weighed in on how Nixon and Kissinger ought to behave better. Lazy lately, I often spout off about the ridiculous Mr. Trump, because opining on local news would be more difficult. Local issues are complex. I might not have all the facts and get it wrong. National commentary, I’m learning, is best used for local ideas. For example, there’s a lot of talk in Washington about Republicans. I wonder if we have those here? Opinion on national politics is everywhere. What about local politics? – Fletcher Farrar, editor
