It doesn’t help much for Illinois editorialists to get angry, bang the table and shout “Unacceptable” about the Statehouse budget impasse, or “Enough,” as they did a year ago. The neutral, blaming-everybody approach lets everybody – legislators and the governor – off the hook so they can escape responsibility as long as they appear to be really mad. “The finger-pointing has gone on for far too long,” booms the group editorial published on front pages of several Illinois newspapers this week. The situation calls for more finger-pointing, not less. Gov. Bruce Rauner’s lack of budget leadership and his willingness to hold the budget hostage for an ever-changing list of non-budget demands got us into this mess. Let’s hope he will get us out of it. –Fletcher Farrar, editor and publisher
