It was a perfect weather night in the park, with tons of children climbing playground equipment, getting soapy in the foam machine, competing in the cake walk. Neighbors old and new celebrated National Night Out with hot dogs and pulled pork sandwiches. Display tables touted the Northside Children’s Community Library, Enos Park Neighborhood Gardens, Third Presbyterian Church and the FBI Citizens Academy, among others. Among the notables present were the park police chief, the city tourism director and the mayor, a “northside girl” as she calls herself, who would soon head off to greet several other NNO gatherings around town. This diverse old neighborhood has been a good investment, a lifetime achievement award, a treasure in heaven. – Fletcher Farrar, editor
