Editor’s note 03-03-22

Thirty-two years ago this week, David Brodsky and his family arrived in the U.S., and soon came to Springfield, from Kyiv, as Soviet Jews seeking refuge from anti-Semitism and economic hardship in Ukraine. His local hosts from the Springfield Jewish Federation brought him by the office of Illinois Times, hoping we could use his graphic design skills. We assigned him a logo for an advertising client. When we presented him a check for the freelance work, he said it was the first money he had made in America. His story soon made the cover of this newspaper, May 31, 1990, and this week he’s in IT again, reflecting on the turmoil in his native land. See page 6.– Fletcher Farrar, editor
