Gov. JB Pritzker is right, as he said in his second inaugural address, that he and the legislature got “big things done” during his first term – things like improving state finances, protecting reproductive rights, instituting nursing home reforms and criminal justice reforms, plus responsibly steering the state through the pandemic. There have been more big successes in just the past week, with the assault weapons ban becoming law (p. 5), and abortion protections approved by the legislature (p. 10). Illinoisans are starting to believe their state doesn’t have to be a corrupt and debt-ridden backwater. When the politics are aligned and the governor is engaged, good things can happen. Inevitably there will be talk about running Pritzker for president, but I say leave him out of that. Illinois needs him here. –Fletcher Farrar, editor
