What does $56,000 buy? If you’re a dog or cat in need of a home, a 30-foot long trailer with air conditioning for when it’s hot outside, heat for when it’s cold, a generator to keep the power going and room for as many as 25 homeless critters to go on display so that potential owners can give them the once-over and, perhaps, go home with a new best friend. The Animal Protective League has launched a fundraising drive to pay for the rig (and a truck to pull it) designed to increase pet adoptions by taking animals out to neighborhoods and community events. In addition to cages for animals, the trailer will also have a so-called meet-and-greet room where prospective owners can spend a bit of time with prospective pets. A “big-hearted APL supporter” has pledged as much as $15,000 in matching money in hopes of encouraging donations, the charity says in its most recent newsletter. The trailer is expected to hit the road by Jan. 1.
