Some like it hot, they say, and if you’re one of the sizzling ones, Hot Property is the band for you. Always exciting, entertaining, and energizing, Kip and company heat up the Breaktime atmosphere on Friday night from 9ish to 2ish. Come for the comedy at the Funny Bone and stay for the dancing, or come for the dancing and check out the laughs with Troy Thirdgill. Either way, the “entertainment complex” will get you coming or going and staying, too.
Razin’ Kane is out and about with a great gig on Friday opening for Confunkshun and the S.O.S. Band at the Interstate Center in Bloomington. While these two stalwarts of the funk and disco era boogie down like never before, our own Springfield musicians will warm up the stage doing the cool, smooth jazz thing. Wow. What do you think about that?
Hark, do I hear the sound of someone bashing Ryan Adams? Why it must be our old friend Robbie Fulks blowing through town from his Windy City abode. Fulks is one of the best there is — funny, serious, clever, thoughtful, angry, whimsical — and we’re just talking about his T-shirts. He is one of the most respected artists out there today, continuing his lifelong music expansion project while still keeping it all in the entertainment basket. My local heroes, Mugshot, open for the Fulks, Saturday at 9 p.m. in the Underground City Tavern, Hilton Springfield.
Hey what’s wrong with you people? The Oohs (a great band) are playing at the State Bar and Grill (a great bar) and you have yet to make plans? Call the babysitter, take a Saturday afternoon nap, tape that movie you don’t want to miss, do whatever it takes to make it out on Saturday night when two of Springfield’s finest come together.
Looking for an Irish-Celtic music fix in May? Lucky you. Simply head out to the State Fairgrounds on Saturday to the Highland Games and Celtic Festival. Exorna, a traditional music group, and Bloomsday entertain during the day. Stone Ring Circle, a Celtic-rock hybrid band, makes merry music for the Afterglow ceidlidh immediately following the games. No kilt peeking please. Just ask who won first prize.
It’s that time of the month again, and just like clockwork the Bowling Alley Big Band shows up at the Spillway Lanes Lounge on Sunday from 6 to 9 p.m. Still reeling from the loss of Toomey Bonardelli, the BABB’s biggest supporter and best publicist, members of the very large band swing on in honor of their fallen comrade. This will be the last chance to dance before the band takes a summer break.
And speaking of Toomey, plan on attending the Blue Monday Jam at the Alamo on May 24. Friends of the late music lover have organized the birthday bash he never allowed while alive. Several local greats are scheduled to perform and pay tribute to a special someone who supported live music locally and globally.
