• PENNY LANE, Springfield’s only surviving store that was once called
a headshop, sponsors a free outdoor concert on Sunday, Sept. 12, at Douglas
Park. The concert, which began as a tribute to Jerry Garcia of the Grateful
Dead, has become a mid-September tradition, celebrating Garcia’s life near the
date of his death.

Perfunctory This Band, area perpetuators of the Deadhead phenomenon, headline the event, with performances throughout the day by Scott Simpson, Springfield Shaky, the Green Grass Pickers, and the Black Sheep.

The concert begins at 1 p.m. and flows on till 9:30 p.m. at the park at the corner of MacArthur and Madison in Springfield.

• THE VOTE FOR CHANGE TOUR — featuring performers who want a new occupant
in the White House — comes to St. Louis’ Fox Theatre, 527 N. Grand Blvd., on
Oct. 6 with a concert by James Taylor and the Dixie Chicks. Ticket information

The Pearl Jam show on Oct. 5, also part of the national tour targeting so-called
battleground states, is sold out.

• CHAMPAIGN’S WILL-TV (Channel 12) celebrates the second season of Video
Diner with a preview party at 10 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 12. Three up-and-coming
rock bands — American Minor, the Like Young, and the Rosebuds — are featured
at Cowboy Monkey, 6 Taylor St. in downtown Champaign. The cover charge is $3.

• THE ST. LOUIS SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA marks the start of its 125th season
on Friday, Sept. 17, with the return of Leonard Slatkin, who left St. Louis
in 1996 to become music director of the National Symphony. Slatkin will conduct
the world premiere of River’s Rush, a work by St. Louis-born composer
Kevin Puts, as well as Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 27 and Shostakovich’s Symphony
No. 5. Performances begin at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Sept. 17 and 18, at
Powell Symphony Hall, 318 N. Grand Blvd. The Sunday show is at 3 p.m. For ticket
