Don’t forget, here’s your chance to
see some of the area’s finest hard rock bands plus a national touring
group at 8 p.m. on Thursday, March 3, at Club 217 (3075 Normandy Rd.,
529-0196). Bobaflex, just off tour with Sevendust, headlines with
we’re-not-worthy (yes, you are!) Funky Circuse Fleas of Beardstown,
Honest Pod of Decatur, and Justify the Means of Peoria.
In
a phenomenal feat of flip-flopping, bar-hopping bands are swapping spots on
this wild and wooly weekend. Still Kick’n featuring Angie Martin roll
into Billy’s Stockyards (3045 Sangamon Ave., 789-0440) on Friday
while Chain Reaction pops into The Still (Old Rte. 54, New Berlin,
488-3325). Then on Saturday, the groups switch bars. I don’t know
what that means, but it somehow seems noteworthy. Should we check on the
alignment of the stars and planets?
Here’s
a Friday night schedule as given to me in a dream by the gods of the
Springfield music scene. Leave work early on Friday and head directly to
Robbie’s (4 Old State Capitol Plaza, 528-1901) for the 5:30-7:30
showing of the Frank Huston Trio with Jeff Cunningham and Steve Alexander,
affectionately known as FHT. Close down the joint and race across to
Southtown and buddy up with Decatur blues legend Catfish Evans at the
Café Kanichi-wa (1117 S. Grand Ave. E, 544-3500). Hang out until
about 11 then shoot over to the Trading Post (731 S. Durkin Dr., 787-8434)
for a glimpse and gander at Bloomington’s hottest blues band, 6V6.
When the lights come on (surprise) chug-a-lug it back to downtown and stop
in at Karma (625 N. First St., 522-1907) for a late night blast with F5 or
finish up with Black Magic Johnson at Jazz Central Station (700 E. Adams
St., 789-1530). By the time you’re asked to leave at 3 a.m.,
you’ll be ready for a quick bite to eat at that Chicago-style food
joint on Fifth and Monroe and a good night (and a bit of the morning)
sleep. Remember these are only suggestions. Feel free to tell my dream gods
to go to heck and follow your own muse.
In
a rare weekday appearance, the Moonlight Rhythm Rangers ride into
Floyd’s Thirst Parlor (212 S. Fifth St., 522-2020) to whoop it up on
Tuesday, March 8, from 9:30 p.m. to sometime after midnight. Play that
country music, white boy, and sing one more for Mo.
