Prepare yourself for the funkifying return of the
funktastic, neofunkadelic Freekbass, playing 10 p.m.-2 a.m. Saturday, Jan.
29, at the Underground City Tavern (700 E. Adams St., 217-789-1530) in the
Hilton Springfield. The band’s frontman, from whom Freekbass takes
its name, is a protégé of the emperor of funk bass, Bootsy
Collins, who manages and produces the Cincinnati-based band.
What is it about the clash of grunge and the flash of speed
that draw us to the heat of metal music in the throes of winter here in the
heartland of America? Who knows, who cares, maybe it doesn’t matter
one iota, but the 217 Winter Metalfest at Club 217 (3075 Normandy Rd.,
217-652-8171) goes on anyway. Catch such scintillating bands as Midshift,
Divulsion, Anti-Everything, Non Thought, Angerwound, Annihilate the Hero,
and Membrata. Bobby Bankroll stops by to liven things up, and you can plan
on a DJ appearance by Jim the Photographer. Doors open at 3 p.m. Sunday,
Jan. 30. Tickets are five bucks each. Get more info on the Web at
www.springfieldconcertweb.com.
Look who’s turning 40 and celebrating the fact at a
show with his favorite band. (Well, what else you gonna do?) Everyone wish
a happy birthday to vocalist, bassist, and all-around most excellent
musician Brian Cutright. Give him a peck or a pat on Friday, Jan. 28, at
the Trading Post Saloon (731 S. Durkin Dr., 217-787-8434). The Oohs start
their show at 9 p.m.
The acoustic dynamic duo of Josh Reilly and Matt Meinhart
remove themselves from the friendly confines of their Tuesday-night open
mic at the Underground City Tavern (they’re still there every
Tuesday, Mom) for a weekend excursion to Norb Andy’s (518 Capitol
Ave., 217-523-7777). The silver-tongued devils strum up a storm from 9
p.m.-midnight Friday, Jan. 28. They play some great covers from the worlds
of Steve Earle and Ryan Adams, plus hold their own with terrific originals.
