The Get Free Music Series, presented by the Music Program of University of Illinois Springfield, continues its fall concerts of fully-improvised music this Friday at Dumb Records. The Oct. 16 performance will feature “two completely burning saxophone and drums duos,” as described by Richard Gilman-Opalsky, drummer and professor in the UIS School of Politics and International Affairs, who is also a co-organizer of the series.
The renowned Minnesota duo of drummer Steve Hirsh and saxophone player Nathan Hanson will be performing as a duo in support of their new album, Memory is Subjective (Mahakala Records).
Similarly, but closer to home, Gilman-Opalsky and ubiquitous Springfield sax-man Frank Trompeter recently released their first two-person album, Antifascist Freedom Music (also on the Hot Springs, Arkansas-based Mahakala label). This will be the second record release performance for the duo, following a concert at Dissonant Works in St. Louis this past July.
“It’ll be two just paint-peeling free jazz duos,” enthused Gilman-Opalsky. “Hardcore sax and drums. Straight to the jugular.”
This Friday’s Get Free concert will take place starting at 7 p.m. at Dumb Records (418 E. Monroe in downtown Springfield) for a suggested donation of $10.
