A popular, award-winning musical currently making its way across theaters in the Midwest and beyond, Come From Away is based on the true story of Gander, Newfoundland – the location of one of several airports that took in diverted international planes after U.S. airspace was closed on 9/11. Within hours, the town’s population nearly doubled, and residents quickly came together to provide for and shelter the “come from aways” in an extraordinary display of compassion.
The show’s powerful message and exceptional ensemble work was on full display at The Legacy Theatre in October 2025 and moved voters to bestow accolades on the production. Skillfully directed and choreographed by Ed MacMurdo and featuring a talented, hard-working cast of 12 actors, each embodying dozens of characters with only the change of an article of clothing or adopting an accent, the Legacy’s Come From Away left an indelible mark on audiences.
A complex, tightly knit one-act, the production was praised for its minimalist approach and committed, diverse performances. Well-executed vocal and music direction, excellent scenic design, simple but evocative sets and lights all coalesced into a pitch-perfect production that reminded viewers of the kindness of strangers and our own shared humanity.
