In a concerted effort to uplift ALICE (Asset Limited, Income
Constrained, Employed) families across the state, United Way of Illinois, the
Association of United Ways across the state, convened stakeholders and
policymakers for a lobby day at the state Capitol earlier this month. UWI’s
programs and initiatives are instrumental in empowering ALICE families and
creating pathways to prosperity.
Expanding access to vital resources
For many ALICE families, accessing vital resources can mean
the difference between stability and uncertainty. Recognizing this need, UWI
successfully advocated for increased funding for 211 services, securing an
additional $3 million in the FY’24 state budget. 211 coverage now extends to more
than 90% of the state including Sangamon and Menard counties, which are covered
by funding from United Way of Central Illinois. Now ALICE families statewide
have improved access to essential services, such as food assistance, housing
support and health care referrals which helps to alleviate financial strain and
promote stability.
Creating financial security
Economic stability is a cornerstone of United Way’s mission,
particularly for ALICE families who often navigate precarious financial
circumstances. Through advocacy efforts, UWI is championing policies that
support economic stability, including the push for a statewide Child Tax Credit
in Illinois. By providing crucial financial relief, the CTC helps ALICE
families cover basic expenses and invest in their futures, breaking the cycle
of poverty and creating opportunities for long-term success.
ALICE families are disproportionately impacted by predatory
lending practices, which can trap them in cycles of debt and financial
insecurity. To address this challenge, UWI is actively working to combat
predatory lending practices in Illinois. By advocating for measures to rein in
high-interest loans, UWI is working to safeguard ALICE families from
exploitation and ensuring that they have the opportunity to build brighter
financial futures.
Promoting early childhood literacy
Investing in early childhood education is vital for ALICE
families, providing children with the foundation they need to succeed
academically and economically. Through programs like Dolly Parton’s Imagination
Library (DPIL), UWI is expanding access to books and engagement activities for
ALICE families across Illinois. By receiving free books each month, children
from ALICE households are given the opportunity to develop critical literacy
skills and foster a love for learning from an early age, setting them on a path
towards academic success and future opportunities.
As UWI continues to empower ALICE families and advocate for
their needs, its commitment to creating a more equitable and prosperous future
for all residents of Illinois remains steadfast. Through collaborative action
and a dedication to uplifting those facing financial challenges, UWI is working
to ensure that every ALICE family has the opportunity to thrive and achieve
their full potential.
