repeated loudly and jeeringly (I can
still hear every syllable) “there’s not
any santa claus! it’s just your mother
and father!” a desperate yammering
crew myself among them appealed to
miss hermann I can still see her gazing
out the window her faint smile her misty
distant eyes hear her say “I have never
seen santa claus – but I do know there is
a Christmas Spirit.” that was enough for
us. but by spring of that 3rd grade year I
was too old to believe in the easter bunny
