The former post office building on State Street in Jacksonville is being renovated to house the new Jacksonville Area Museum. The museum will be dedicated to the collection, preservation, interpretation and appreciation of the cultural history and heritage of Jacksonville and the surrounding area, and will include interactive displays and interpretive objects. While it is scheduled to open in the summer of 2021, the work-in-progress tour – a rare opportunity to see the museum before it is fully open – will be offered this Saturday. “We want visitors to see the progress we’ve made in developing this long-awaited attraction,” said museum board chairman David Blanchette. “The museum is not nearly complete, but this sneak peak will feature a partially completed exhibit station, some items from the MacMurray College archive collection and a sense of how the old post office is being adapted for its new role.” COVID-19 guidelines will be strictly followed for the tour.
