The Springfield Area Arts Council is facilitating the return of Shakespeare in the Park on Friday, July 24, from 6-8 p.m. at Enos Park, 1000 N. Seventh St., in Springfield.
Now in its third year, Shakespeare in the Park will take a different approach than previous seasons. This year’s event will showcase Illinois playwright Kevin Purcell’s one-act play, Lincoln and Shakespeare, featuring acclaimed Carbondale actor Kim Curlee.
In honor of the nation’s upcoming America 250 commemorations, Lincoln and Shakespeare showcases one of the nation’s most influential presidents who called Springfield Illinois his home. Says Purcell, “The focus of the play is this question: Did Lincoln’s love of Shakespeare influence his writing and actions?”
Through a compelling blend of history, literature and performance, the play examines how Shakespeare may have shaped Lincoln’s character, thinking and leadership during one of the most consequential periods in American history.
The production has already garnered significant local interest. Earlier this year it was performed at the Hoogland Center for the Arts, where it drew enthusiastic audiences and nearly sold out each performance.
Following the performance, attendees will have the opportunity to participate in a question-and-answer session with the artists, providing deeper insight into the historical research, creative process, and enduring connections between Lincoln and Shakespeare.
“Over the past two years, Shakespeare in the Park has brought professional outdoor Shakespeare performances to Springfield,” said Bella Szabo, executive director of the Springfield Area Arts Council. “This year, we’re excited to present a unique production that celebrates both our nation’s history and the incredible talent found right here in our community. The success of Lincoln and Shakespeare earlier this year demonstrated just how much interest there is in this fascinating story.”
Admission is free and open to the public. A suggested donation of $25 helps support future Shakespeare in the Park performances and other free arts programs offered by the Arts Council. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets and enjoy an evening of theater in one of Springfield’s most historic neighborhoods.
