Artists young and old will take over part of Washington Street on Saturday with paint buckets and brushes in hand for this popular, colorful event. Participants paint 6-by-6 squares of pavement with the topics of their choice using water-soluble paint provided by the Springfield Art Association. Up to six artists can paint a square. Artists can preregister by midnight today. Squares cost $35 or $45 (professional category.) Squares also can be bought on Saturday but prices will be $5 more. SAA members save $5 on the cost. Those registering for the event will receive a paint supply bucket and paint, a giveaway bag of items from sponsors and a Paint the Street T-shirt. Additional shirts cost $10. The event will close Washington Street from Fourth to Eighth streets, but the cobblestone section of Washington between Fifth and Sixth streets will not be painted. The event even includes a “Paint the Driveway” option in which participants can pick up supplies to paint their driveway, sidewalk, patio or even the SAA parking lot. Proceeds of the event benefit the association.
