As United Way of Central Illinois prepares for its annual Campaign Celebration this March, community members, donors and partners will have a unique opportunity to experience firsthand the struggles many families face every day. The event will not only recognize the generosity of those who have contributed to this year’s campaign but will also feature the Kitchen Table Experience – a powerful simulation of a month in the life of an ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) family. This interactive experience aims to deepen attendees’ understanding of financial hardship and the tough choices families must make to get by.

United Way’s Campaign Celebration has long been a time to honor those who help make a difference in central Illinois. This year, the event takes on an even greater purpose, providing a glimpse into the daily challenges of individuals who work hard but struggle to afford basic needs such as housing, food and health care. The Kitchen Table Experience will encourage participants to step into the shoes of an ALICE family and navigate difficult decisions about budgeting, unexpected expenses and accessing critical resources.

Bringing the community together

The Kitchen Table Experience serves as a reminder that financial hardship isn’t always visible, yet it affects many working families. Attendees will be presented with real-life scenarios that local families face, such as choosing between paying rent or an unexpected bill, determining whether to repair a vehicle or buy groceries, or struggling to find affordable child care.

We want people to walk away with a deeper understanding of the challenges ALICE families face. The choices they’ll have to make in the simulation are very real for many in our community, and we hope this experience fosters even greater understanding and action.

In addition to the interactive experience, the Campaign Celebration will recognize the outstanding efforts of donors, volunteers, and corporate partners who have supported United Way’s mission. This annual event is an opportunity to celebrate the generosity of Central Illinois residents who are committed to making a difference.

Recognizing 211 Day: A lifeline for those in need

As United Way gears up for the Campaign Celebration, another significant date approaches – 211 Day, recognized annually on Feb. 11. The 211 helpline, a free and confidential service supported by United Way, connects individuals to essential community resources 24/7. From housing assistance and food pantries to mental health services and disaster relief, 211 serves as a critical support system for those in need.

The timing of the Campaign Celebration and 211 Day presents a unique opportunity to highlight the value of this vital resource. Many families who struggle financially also struggle to navigate the complex web of social services available to them. That’s where 211 comes in. Whether someone is facing eviction, experiencing food insecurity, or simply needs to find transportation to a medical appointment, trained specialists at 211 provide guidance and referrals to available assistance programs.

The 211 helpline is a lifeline for so many in our community. It ensures that people have access to the help they need when they need it most. We want to continue raising awareness about 211 so that more individuals and families can utilize this resource.

A stronger community through connection and support

United Way of Central Illinois continues to focus on its message of connection, support, and community strength. The work United Way does – funding critical programs, mobilizing volunteers, and advocating for systemic change – relies on both financial contributions and a shared commitment to improving lives.

This year’s celebration isn’t just about recognizing past efforts; it’s about looking forward. By stepping into the shoes of an ALICE family, attendees will gain a deeper understanding of the ongoing challenges in our community and the importance of investing in long-term solutions. Programs like 211 are part of that solution, helping connect individuals with the resources they need to achieve stability and success.

United Way invites community members to reserve their table or seat early for this transformative event. As the organization continues its mission to build a stronger Central Illinois, it encourages everyone – donors, volunteers, and businesses – to reflect on how they can contribute to lasting change.
