People from all backgrounds, ages and skill levels have found their home with a Sangamon County line dancing community.
Boots on the Line is a community of dancers that organizes on a Facebook page and hosts weekly line dancing throughout Sangamon County. The schedule is posted monthly, with different venues open to different age groups. The group is hosted by and supports local businesses, and it regularly offers sessions that are free to attend.
The parking lot at Route 66 Motorheads Bar & Grill in Springfield was full on the evening of Sept. 17. Inside, dancers ranging from age 21 to over 80 were lined up facing the stage at the front of the room, ready to learn this week’s new dance.
There was a mix of first-time attendees and regulars in attendance. The message from Shelly, Boots on the Line instructor, was a warm welcome and excitement to see everyone.
Many dancers who frequent Boots on the Line events came to try out the group one time and have kept coming back, although the reasons varied.
Between grapevines and turns, Boots on the Line participants told an IT writer why they love the group so much.
Myah Workman, a regular at Boots on the Line, said she keeps coming back because of the welcoming community and the local impact.
“There’s room for everybody on the floor, no need to come prepared,” Workman said. “Everything is supported locally. Tip the bartenders, get the food.”
Another regular, Nathaniel Ed, agreed that the community was open to all and was a highlight of the experience.
“It’s a great community, very welcoming community,” Ed said. “And it’s great exercise, honestly. That’s one of the best parts of it, too.”
Boots on the Line will expand beyond local restaurants and hold an event from 7-10 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 24, at Scheels Sports Park. The group hopes to reach record attendance at this event, which is open to all ages, and encourages all participants to wear their favorite sports apparel. Food and beverages will be available for purchase on site.
