FUNDRAISERS AND SHOWS | “Howling good” times set this weekend for dogs, owners
Humankind’s best friend takes center stage this weekend at three events happening in the capital city. Springfield’s “only Halloween Party” for dogs once again takes place at Stuart Park, where dogs and their humans can take part in various activities including a dog costume contest, games, paw painting on canvas and more. The event, which benefits the Animal Protective League, includes a kids’ fun zone, pumpkin painting and vendors. Admission is $3 for one dog or $5 for two. The APL says the event will be a “howling good time.” Meanwhile, the annual, three-day Prairie River all-breed dog show starts Friday at the Expo Building at the Illinois State Fairgrounds. Watch the judging of dogs in each breed as the canines compete for best of breed honors and best of show. Admission is free for the event, which runs from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day through Sunday. On Sunday, dog lovers can attend a benefit at Weebles Bar & Grill in support of The Helping Paw Project, which finds homes and medical care for older dogs. Three bands will take the stage from noon to 6 p.m.
