The Springfield City Council meeting took an intense turn on several fronts.

Right before adjournment, Ward 2 Ald. Shawn Gregory pressed for answers about the 12th Street explosion site: who is actually responsible for cleaning it up, how long it will sit there as a “tourist attraction,” and what the city can do if the property owner doesn’t move fast—especially with kids living right next door.

Earlier, Ward 6 Ald. Jennifer Notariano shared Halloween trick or treat details and gave a shout out to neighborhood groups cleaning up alleys… then shifted to a serious warning: confirmed ICE activity in Springfield, the police department’s limits on cooperating with immigration enforcement, and where residents can learn their rights.

During public comment, Ken Pacha called out a recent arrest video as a clear example of over policing on the east side, questioning why the city can find millions for police tech but not tens of thousands for officer mental health and accountability.

Julio Barrenzuela, a Springfield resident and veteran, described Latino families making emergency plans around ICE operations, asked what real help a 911 call would bring during an encounter with federal agents, and urged the city to clearly state how it will protect residents.

Watch to see how city leaders responded — and what wasn’t answered yet.

  1. Surely Ken Pacha is playing dumb, the city is motivated to pay for police tech but they have no desire to pay for “officer mental health and accountability.” It’s just like how Ken finds the funds to buy an Apple Watch (on his wrist), cigarettes and weed, but doesn’t pay his credit cards, property taxes, or his many traffic fines.
