What began as a community photo opportunity on the lawn of the historic Macoupin County Courthouse turned into a Christmas surprise worthy of a Hallmark movie.
Residents of Carlinville gathered Thursday afternoon believing they were participating in a special community photo shoot. Instead, a Hallmark bus arrived carrying stars Erin Cahill, Tamera Mowry-Housley, Jonathan Bennett and Brendan Penny, who joined in revealing that Carlinville had been named the first ever Hallmark’s Merriest Christmas Town, selected from 25 finalists across the U.S.
For the occasion, Hallmark transformed the courthouse grounds into a winter wonderland, complete with festive decorations, seasonal treats, refreshments and entertainment. Local bakers, a coffee shop, decorators and entertainers helped bring the celebration to life, making the surprise an especially fitting tribute to the community being honored.
The announcement marked the culmination of Hallmark’s nationwide search for a town that embodies the warmth, traditions, neighborly connections and goodwill at the heart of its beloved Christmas movies.

For Carlinville, a small community in south-central Illinois along historic Route 66, the recognition is especially meaningful because its nomination focused not on elaborate Christmas displays or extravagant attractions, but on the people and relationships that define the town.
“When we submitted our nomination, we weren’t describing a place we dreamed of becoming,” said Karin Doolin, executive director of the Carlinville CommUnity Chamber of Commerce. “We were telling Hallmark the story of who we already are. To have them recognize something so special in our everyday lives is an extraordinary honor.”
Carlinville was the only Illinois community selected among the 25 national finalists. Following weeks of public voting and an evaluation of community spirit, holiday traditions, neighborhood charm and goodwill, Hallmark selected Carlinville for its national recognition.
The town will receive national exposure through Hallmark’s Countdown to Christmas promotion and the opportunity to serve as a filming location for a future Hallmark Christmas movie.
For residents, Thursday’s announcement was an opportunity to celebrate the community they have helped build over generations.
“This is about every person who has ever shown up for a neighbor, volunteered their time, supported a local business, or helped make Carlinville a place people are proud to call home,” Doolin said. “Those are the stories that make a town special. And now the rest of the country is going to get to know ours.”
