The Sangamon County Board just heard some of the strongest public calls yet for recall powers — tying today’s debate to decades of civil rights struggles and high profile local cases that have given the county a “black eye.”
Citizen Ken Pacha pushed recall as a proactive accountability tool: a way for taxpayers to remove officials mid term when leadership goes seriously off course, not just wait out the clock on a damaged department or a broken promise.
Then the board finally took up the recall resolution itself. A voice vote, a requested roll call, a tense moment over whether members could explain their votes, and a 19–6 tally that decided the fate of the measure.
The meeting didn’t stop at recall. The board also tightened the rules on the CyrusOne data center deal — including an amendment giving the county administrator power to halt permit review if the company doesn’t reimburse professional service costs within 14 days, and a brief debate over what “timely manner” really means (and who gets a say before the project is put on pause).
