Fans of contemporary rock and metal should be
thrilled about this Low as I Friday night show at Viele’s Planet (126
E. Jefferson St., 525-9029). The local group recently toured briefly with
platinum-selling act Saliva. Now with the major label band on hiatus,
drummer Paul Crosby formed Solace for Now with old buddies and bandmates
from his hometown of Memphis, Tenn., and has graciously stopped by for a
Springfield show. Nevyd’s Krest and State of Mind help fill up the 10
p.m. to 3 a.m. time slot. Low as I and Solace for Now also perform at My
Way Pub (107 Douglas St., Pawnee, 625-8488) at 8 p.m. on Thursday for a
special acoustic show.
They’re back. The John
Wilde Group once of Liverpool, England, now working steadily in the Land of
Lincoln, plays Saturday night at the Trading Post Saloon, (731 S. Durkin
Dr., 787-8434) from 9 to 1. After a pleasant business trip through the
Southeast and Texas, the Brits are hanging out in town, picking up gigs,
and enjoying the hospitality of the locals. The drummer may look different,
but you know what those long, strange trips can do to a musician.
We’ve been hearing great
things about two out-of-town live music nightclubs and it just so happens
both bars are having bands this weekend. The Eldorado Bowl (1234 W.
Eldorado Ave., 428-8631), an old converted bowling alley, features Jack
Flash on Friday and Hot Property on Saturday. The bar is called End Zone
and you’ll find it by heading east to neighboring Decatur, the soy
capital of the world. The City’s Sports Pub & Grill (219 S. Main
St., 243-1212) is the new kid in downtown Jacksonville. Check out Hot
Property (they’re everywhere) on Friday and The Low Down Blues Band
on Saturday, both play from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.
Please join Springfield Shaky
for his birthday celebration. The reigning Blues King of the capital city
begins on Thursday at Café Kanichi-Wa (1117 S. Grand Ave. E.,
544-3500) from 7 p.m. to God knows when. The official b-day party,
featuring his honor’s Whorehouse Band, starts around 9 p.m. Friday,
also at the Café K. Take a break, then rejoin the commemoration from
6-9 p.m. Sunday at the café for the Illinois Central Blues
Club’s Sunday Shuffles. The party wraps up Monday at the ICBC’s
Blue Monday jam at the Alamo (115 N. Fifth St., 523-1455), around 8:30.
