ADOPT A MESSY ORPHAN
Mayor Tim Davlin and the folks at Springfield Green
last week unveiled the latest effort to clean up litter.
“Adopt-a-Street,” which is modeled on the state’s
adopt-a-highway program, aims to clean up the city’s streets through
volunteerism. St. John’s Hospital, the first business to join up, is
pledging to keep tidy a one-mile stretch of Ninth Street near the hospital.
Volunteers from each business agree to remove litter a minimum of four
times a year over a two-year period. For more info, go to

since February 2002, stops for a while in the capital city to discuss his

GOODWILL OPENS LOCATION
Goodwill Industries opens a new Springfield resale
store and collection center at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 23. The new
14,000-square-foot facility, located at 2305 W. Monroe St., will operate 9
a.m.-7 p.m. Monday-Saturday and noon-6 p.m. Sunday. Land of Lincoln
Goodwill Industries has three other local stores, as well as locations in
Jacksonville, Champaign, and Bloomington. The nonprofit serves 150 people
with disabilities.
HEARTS ON FIRE
The University of Illinois at Springfield presents
the seminar “Hearts on Fire: Southern and Northern Women in the Civil
War” 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Friday, June 17, in Brookens Auditorium. The
program, the third in the “Society, Slavery, and the Civil War”
series, is free and open to the public, but reservations are required. For

SEA NAMES NEW LEADER
Robin Ehrhart, a math and calculus teacher at
Springfield High School, took over this week as president of the
Springfield Education Association, the union that represents District 186
teachers and support personnel. She succeeds Cinda Klickna, who was
recently elected secretary-treasurer of the Illinois Education Association.
