Springfield’s Sojourn Shelter & Services is collecting used, unwanted
cell phones as part of its effort to curb domestic violence.
Sojourn is working with Miramar, Fla.-based Shelter Alliance to collect and
recycle old phones. Money raised from the sale of the used phones will be channeled
to social-service agencies; also, some donated phones will be given to clients.
(The phones can be used to dial 911 for emergencies, even though no airtime
remains.) Phones can be delivered to 1800 Westchester Blvd. between 8 a.m. and
4 p.m. Monday-Friday, or sent to Shelter Alliance (www.shelteralliance.net).
Several area businesses, including Illinois Times, Security Bank, Carrolton
Bank, Horace Mann Cos. and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois, also are collecting
phones.
Sojourn encourages contributors to remove all identifying information – phone
numbers, e-mail addresses and names.
CHICKEN NUGGET
Prairie chickens, which once flourished in the Prairie State, are
the subject of the final program in the Illinois State Museum’s acclaimed John
James Audubon series.
Scott Simpson of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources will present
“Prairie Chickens at Prairie Ridge State Natural Area” at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb.
29, at the state museum. Simpson’s presentation is free and open to the public.
Reservations aren’t required, but seating is limited.
The museum’s Sunday gallery series is centered on the “John James Audubon:
The Birds of America” exhibit. Hand-colored etchings and chromolithographs from
Audubon’s original drawings are on display with bird specimens from the museum’s
collection.
The Illinois State Museum, located at 502 South Spring Street in Springfield,
is open from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays, and from noon to
5 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free.
