AN EIGHT-MONTH ODYSSEY

The Illinois Humanities Council is accepting
applications for the Odyssey Project, a free eight-month college-level
humanities course for low-income adults. Classes, which meet two evenings a
week, begin in mid-September at the Urban League Head Start Center, 1108 E.

ADAMS FAMILY VALUED

The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum recorded its
200,000th visitor, James E. Adams of Bloomington, on Monday, July 18. Adams
brought his mother, Phillis Adams of Naples, Fla., to see the
three-month-old attraction. The Adamses received a gift bag of museum-store
items.

HELP PLAN ASTHMA WALK

The American Lung Association hosts an organizational
luncheon to plan and promote its annual Asthma Walk, which raises funds for
research and education about the disease. The free luncheon will be held at
noon Tuesday, July 26, at The Inn at 835, 835 S. Second St. To reserve a

GREENING UP THE CITY

The city plans landscape improvements to six major
thoroughfares, with the goal of giving Springfield’s gateways a
greener and more harmonious look. The Springfield Green initiative,
outlined at a press conference last week by Mayor Tim Davlin, calls for
plantings of trees and bulbs, trash removal, and other aesthetic
improvements to South Fifth Street, South Sixth Street, South Grand Avenue,
Clear Lake Avenue, Wabash Avenue, and Jefferson Street. To participate in a

VETERANS BENEFIT

A new federal Department of Veterans Affairs office
designed to process benefit claims will open in the offices of the Illinois
Department of Veterans Affairs in Springfield, Lt. Gov. Pat Quinn announced
last week. The downstate office, staffed by employees of the federal VA
office in Chicago, opens in October.
