THIS JUST IN

“Sound bites are overshadowing substance in the U.S. Senate campaign,”
according to the current edition of Illinois Issues, the respected Springfield-based
monthly.

Of course, when one of the candidates is Alan Keyes, the bites are big and
they’re hard to digest, even for Illinois Republican Party leaders who tapped
the Maryland talk radio host as their candidate when Jack Ryan bailed.

In two months as the GOP standard bearer, Keyes has trashed Vice President
Dick Cheney’s daughter as a “selfish hedonist” (she’s a lesbian), equated abortion
to terrorism, and told voters Jesus Christ wouldn’t vote for Barack Obama, the
Democratic nominee.

Keyes and Obama mix it up next week in the first of three broadcast debates.
The two candidates meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 12, at the Old State Capitol.
Their debate will be carried locally by WTAX (AM 1240).

RELIVE A BAD MEMORY

In case you’re not anxious enough about the Nov. 2 election, your
friendly local peace movement is showing a documentary that’ll help you experience
the botched 2000 presidential election again.

Unprecedented: The 2000 Presidential Election examines alleged irregularities,
primarily in Florida, that led to George W. Bush’s first term in office.

The film, originally released in 2002, will be shown at 7 p.m. Wednesday,
Oct. 13, in the Carnegie Room North of Lincoln Library. Sponsors are Middle
East Peace Project, Pax Christi, and the Women’s International League for Peace
and Freedom.
