MEMORIES OF MACARTHUR Your article on MacArthur Boulevard brought back some
good memories because my husband and I each spent a few years of our
childhood in the area [R.L. Nave, “Rocky road,” March 6]. My dad used to work [at the dairy mixing plant]. When
we moved to Springfield in 1960, I believe there used to be a diner in the
front of that building. Years later, I trained at that DQ next door. We
were sad to see it close. The McDonald’s on MacArthur is one of the few
original restaurants with the single arch. We remember when the sign read
“over 2 million sold.” And fries were 15 cents, and hamburgers were 25
cents!
All in all, it was an interesting article. I still
catch the bus, and occasionally shop in the stores at Town & Country,
while my husband works in the state building on Outer Park; it’s
almost like going home again. Sure hope we can get MacArthur alive and
kickin’ again.

OBAMASHOWSHISINTEGRITY The United Church of Christ is back in the news in a
way to diminish U.S. Sen. Barack Obama’s character and love of
country. He had to denounce and reject some words of his pastor [but] my
guess is you could hear a similar spirited message in many black churches
on nearly any Sunday of the year. Taken out of context and put, in selected
snippets, on white America’s TV screen may be more than most can
process. Obama’s integrity is seen in his not leaving
his faith community nor rejecting his pastor; instead, only stating the
true fact that these were not his own views.
For Obama to try to explain these complexities is
beyond anything that can be done in such a political and cultural climate.
I wish some voices would come forward to set this straight. The Rev. Jim Hibbett Riverton
EVENABLINDPIG . . . George Culley is one of those hate-spewing mongrels
that should be kept on a leash [“Letters,”March 13]. The best
thing any of us could do is burn his words. I could only agree with 10
words: “Spending $200 million for a $400,000 job is not right.”

THE ULTIMATESACRIFICE It was good to Illinois
Times do a piece on how we can cut global
warming by taking beef and pork out of our diet [“Earth Talk,”
March 13]. The article could have softened the blow a bit because Americans
are much more terrified of going without beef than they are of going to
war. Yet, it would have been good to suggest Americans use poultry and fish
as an alternative, softening the terror. Some sacrifices are just too hard
