“St. Louis was shrinking until the immigrants arrived,” according to the March 9 New York Times. The long article details the city’s efforts over the last several years to attract immigrants. In 2023 the region added 30,000 foreign-born residents, almost enough to replace the 34,000 native-born residents who had left. Now parts of the city are thriving with Afghan groceries, restaurants and businesses, and an engineering firm owned by an immigrant from Venezuela. But the Trump administration’s crackdown on immigration threatens the strategy, making even documented immigrants feel unwelcome. Someday the nation must again move past the current demonizing of foreigners, to agree on fair immigration laws and a path to citizenship. Historically, immigration has been a source of strength for this nation. With calmer voices and better policies, it can be again. – Fletcher Farrar, editor
