Every time you turn around, it seems, up pops another
benefit for some person or organization. With so many deserving people in
need, it’s hard not to become overwhelmed. Perhaps we can’t
make every benefit or fundraiser in town, but we shouldn’t become
indifferent to all. This Saturday, July 14, at the Sherman Athletic Club,
in Sherman, supporters of Amanda Phillips will gather between 4 and 11
p.m., donating time and money to aid her and her mother in their time of
crisis. Phillips, a 2007 graduate of Williamsville High School, recently
awoke from a coma caused by injuries sustained in a June car accident. Her
mother, Cindy Hickey, a single working mom, has spent the last three weeks
at her daughter’s bedside in the hospital, missing work and wages.
Family and friends have planned an event featuring live music, a silent
auction, door prizes, and food.
Peace Camp, Springfield’s only summer day camp
dedicated to teaching wee ones how to peacefully coexist, holds a
12th-anniversary celebration and concert fundraiser on Sunday, July 15, in
the Club Room at the Hoogland Center for the Arts. Organizers promise cake
and ice cream, plus live music, between 1:30 and 5:30 p.m.; all proceeds
will benefit to the completely volunteer-run camp. __________
Anyone who missed the Melvin Taylor concert at the
Shambolee Golf Course in Petersburg last spring may seek redemption at 8
p.m. Friday, July 13. The talented and exciting Chicago guitarist mixes
jazz, blues, and rock into a tantalizing concoction sure to please fans of
Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and other power-trio blues acts. Once again live music is being presented on a regular
basis at the Hilton, a good thing for local music lovers and lovers of
local music. On Friday, July 13, the Underground City Tavern hosts Fast
Orange and the Kentucky Knife Fight in a show that’s not for the faint of heart. Expect
music that’s loud, fast, and fun. Up top, at Jazz Central Station, 9
p.m.-midnight Saturday, July 14, catch the cool and vibrant sounds of Craig
Russo’s Latin Jazz Project. Over the last few years, through live
performances and recorded music, the combo has garnered a well-deserved
reputation in the Midwest as a wonderful rhythm-jazz group.
