While we work our way through the month of October, the outdoor gigs are getting the cold shoulder as we begin to drift indoors to the warm embrace of manufactured heat and creature comforts. Let’s see what we can find going on in the scene.
First, I’d like to jump ahead to Sunday, Oct. 29, when family and friends will gather to host a benefit/fundraiser for Bo Dean (Lowder) at the Curve Inn from 3 to 7 p.m. Bo is a great musician and wonderful person who had a tumor removed from his brain last June. Now he’s in recovery mode, but as you might imagine, that can take time, and he could use some financial support while getting better. Josie and the Lowder family are helping to organize the event that includes music by Deja Voodoo, Rock & Roll Sisters, Bustin’ Loose, Dreamsicles and others. It’s all emceed by Hipbone Sam with a 50/50 drawing, silent and live auction (go to the Rock & Roll Sisters Facebook page to donate items) and plenty of food available for a $10 donation at the door (but you can give whatever you want). Once again, our community comes together to support those in need and music is at the heart of it all. Go, Bo!
Thursday is a good night full of great music, including a Brandon Santini & his Band show at the Curve Inn and Me, Myself and Schy at Boone’s. Speaking of Boone’s, Friday evening (5:30-7:30) the Debbie Ross Band hits at the Friday Night Jazz & Blues weekly spot sponsored by the Springfield Area Arts Council. Nobody does it like Debbie and it’s great to see (and hear) her out playing regularly again.
Next week is Soul Field, but you can rest assured that any Friday night you show up, the music will be good stuff, Maynard (haven’t heard that one in awhile!). Also on Friday night, Wayward Motel, with special guest Wolf Crick Boys, takes the stage at the Blue Grouch, while the Jay Larson Band (JLB) does a tribute to Jerry Garcia Band (JGB) at Coonrods for a couple of cool, rockin’ shows.
Like many outdoor-based venues, Sheedy Shores WineGarden wraps up the season soon, but as we’ve said here before, it’s done next year as a music venue except for occasional special events. Fortunately, it’s going out big with acts lined up all weekend, including Tracy Gibbs on Friday (5-8 p.m.), War Road Gypsy on Saturday (4-7 p.m.) and Tim Duggan on Sunday (2-5 p.m.). Next weekend Sheedy Shores hosts a “Hallowine” party on Saturday, then Joel Honey plays Sunday afternoon for the final show. Boohoo.
This Saturday, VFW Lafore Lock Post 755 (by the big blue water tower on Old Jacksonville Road) hosts its annual Brews & BBQs event starting at noon. The family-friendly party brings in Voodoo Exiles to play the Rolling Stones (1-3 p.m.) and includes lots of fun stuff for kids to do (bounce house, face painting) other than grooving to Stones songs. Plus, be sure to check out their live music schedule as this VFW hall has stepped up this last year to book lots of good bands and musicians in the bar area. More music! More venues! More music! More venues! Well, you get the idea.
Sunday is chock-full of all kinds of music getting made including Buzz Bomb hosting its final Dog Days event of the season with Prairie State of Mind doing the song-playing honors from 3 to 6 and special guest Evan vs Michael covering the set break. Come on down.
That should do it until next week when the Best of Springfield issue is due.
