March on
The Stephen Vincent Benét musical John Brown’s Body, named
for the Union marching song, tells the tale of abolitionist John Brown from
the perspectives of Jack Ellyat, a Union soldier, and Clay Wingate, a
Confederate. The stories of the two men’s lives and loves are
intertwined — sometimes in song — with Brown’s raid on
Harper’s Ferry, his execution, and the Civil War. Theatre in the Park
veteran John Woodruff, in his first stint as a director, takes the helm of
the performance. John Brown’s Body continues next weekend.

Country girl
Loretta Lynn climbed to iconic status in the
country-music world in the quintessential rags-to-riches story, chronicled
in the popular 1980 biopic Coal Miner’s
Daughter. She isn’t one to rest on her
laurels, though: Her 2004 collaboration with garage-rocker Jack White of
the White Stripes, Van Lear Rose, garnered two Grammy Awards. Lynn, known for her soulful
voice and sassy sensibilities, makes a stop at Sangamon Auditorium this
weekend to sing her classic tunes.
