FEASTIVAL |Run? and fun!raiser Here’s the most enjoyable race you’ll ever enter. Whether you run or walk, stations along the route include donuts,
ice cream and beer, as well as other surprises. If you tucker out and cannot
complete the entire course, there’s a detour to reduce your route from 3.1 miles into a doable one-tenth of a mile
where complimentary ice cold beer awaits you at Celtic Mist Pub, 117 S. Seventh
Street, between Adams and Washington Streets. It’s all in good fun to raise money for Multiple Sclerosis, a neurological disease
that affects approximately 400,000 people in the United States. But for all you
blubber butts and fun grabbers, there’s more slough and gluttony. Whether you participate in the race or not, the
street party includes all the artery clogging, bad-for-you essentials: a pig
roast, more cold beer and soda. Live music is as sweet as icing on the cake.

NATURE |Frolic with fauna The Henson Robinson Zoo opens its season with a free admission day. That’s a bargain for a day full of fun for the entire family. Dr. Dolittle Day soars
with turtle races, animal programs, food, a petting zoo, free t-shirts for the
first 500 and more. In addition, local author Scotti Cohn, reads from her new
book One Wolf Howls at 1:00 p.m. The Zoo houses 300 animals native to Australia, Africa, Asia and
North and South America. Do the zoo Saturday. It is one of Springfield’s exceptional attractions for kids of every age.

THE ARTS |Talent showcase
Several art organizations call the Hoogland Center for the Arts home. Their
talents and offerings are showcased Saturday night. Participating arts groups
include: Gordon Productions, Land of Lincoln Barbershop Chorus, Prairie Art
Alliance, Sangamon Watercolor Society, Sangamon Valley Community Orchestra,
Sound Celebration Chorus, Springfield Area Arts Council, Springfield Ballet
Company, Springfield International Folk Dancers, Springfield Muni Opera,
Springfield Old Capitol Art Fair, Springfield Theatre Centre and UMEDIA. The
cast of Nunsense will perform, along with a preview of the upcoming production of Springfield
Muni Opera’s Oliver and a preview of the upcoming Springfield Theatre Centre 2009-2010 season. Gus

CHILDREN |Exploring beetles This Saturday, children four through eight years of age can learn more about the
bugs we call beetles in connection with the rock group that many of us know as
one of the greatest bands of all time, The Beetles. The entire family can
participate in activities that are ongoing throughout the day, take about 30
minutes to complete, and feature take-home crafts. Beetlemania is a Super
Saturday event at the museum. Super Saturdays are free thematic activities held
each month in A Place for Discovery, a learning room for kids at the Illinois
State Museum.

BAND SPOTLIGHT | Lazer Dudes So what are Lazer Dudes? The band is an offshoot or shall we say a peculiar growth, from
the minds of Josh Catalano and Marc Broomby, the Glimmer Twins of the Damnwell
Betters. The two musicians, particularly prolific lately, produced and
predominantly wrote the Damnwell Betters’ 2008 full-length recording, Coming in Hot, and the Lazer Dudes’ six-song EP coming out this Saturday, both recorded locally at Broomby’s studio and released on MoonPanda Records. Other Lazer Dudes, or von Lazers as
referred to on their MySpace page, include Jordan Laier, Jay Benoit and Rory
Davis. So what do they sound like? Well, mix some 70s glam-rock, 80s techno-sounds, raw rock-n-roll vocals,
and tight, modern rock band energy and you begin to capture the essence of the
Lazer Dudes. Summer plans include major market promotion and touring, which
should bring smashing success and a bright future for the band of living life
largely.
