Irish Poem #8Â
her grandfather built the
cottage a hundred years ago
one roomed, thick walled
the kind you see in
coffee table booksÂ
I sit in the inglenookÂ
(there must be a celtic nameÂ
for that recessed spot
seats on two sides
fire in the middle you canÂ
look right up the chimney)Â
she showed me how to turnÂ
the handle of the large wheelÂ
against the wall that somehow
sends air up through the grate’sÂ
bottom: I cranked it round
and round made the peat glowÂ
bright she said you need to makeÂ
a wish whenever you do
something new – my wish isÂ
to return to Lena’s inglenookÂ
