It’s here and so are we as the Labor Day holiday comes on Monday preceded by a full weekend of music adventures available for your entertainment pleasure. Often cited as the official, unofficial end-of-summer holiday, let’s take a moment to recognize the work of the workers of the world before we hit the streets in search of frolic and fun with friends and family.
Starting our run on Thursday, I spy me playing for the Illinois Product Farmers Market at the Shed on the Illinois State Fairgrounds as the market returns from its State Fair break. Casey’s Pub hosts Kerry Lee, up from Southern Illinois for country classics and more on the patio while Allan Harris and Aley Alvey bring sweet duet sounds to Mother Road Diner just as Jackson Taylor and the Sinners with Claudey Blue take it to the Stadium Smokehouse for an outlaw country, hard rockin’ night.
The bars are hopping this weekend with several doing both Friday and Saturday nights like Harry’s Adult Day Care giving us first Joel Honey and then The Collective, while The Blue Grouch hosts the great blues man Chris O’Leary and his killer band, then has The Warped Kids and Cringe for a pop punk tribute night, as Boone’s jazzes things up with the Kevin Hart Trio then Craig Russo’s Latin Jazz Project. The Railyard makes it a triple play in two days with Jason Oldham going acoustic on Friday, then Robert Micheal Beam with Bluesmattic and Robert Sampson on Saturday afternoon and Travis Ried Band in the evening for a full serving of blues, while Dockside Grill goes three for three with Jet Trio & Friends on Friday, Jason McKenzie on Saturday and Brian Steinhauer on Sunday.
Special festivities over the weekend include the S.O.B. (Springfield Oyster and Beer) Fez-tival in a new location at the home of our Ansar Shriners (putting the “fez” in festival) near Cook and Sixth streets on Saturday from noon to 5. They’ve got plenty of craft beer and oysters available, plus for our concerns, live music with Not Petty, Smokestacks and Jonnie Concaroo Band, then starting at 5 p.m., a bonus Gold Maps party performance outside at Obed & Isaacs.
For live music at out-of-town events, the annual Prairie Land Chautauqua at Nichols Park in Jacksonville hosts two terrific singer-songwriters and acclaimed Illinois folklorists, as Chris Vallillo plays Friday and Bucky Halker hits on Saturday evening along with the Lamoine River Ramblers at 2 p.m., plus plenty of presentations all based on a Route 66 theme for 2026. The Rusty Bucket in Greenview presents their second annual Mini-Music Festival featuring Antone DeRocchi and The Green View on Saturday with Kent Gray and Fusion Ignite on Sunday. The long-running Edinburg Labor Day Picnic is a-happening with all kinds of activities including live music, of course. There’s Molly Seaton at noon, then White Lightnin’, with The Antics on directly after the demolition derby on Saturday. Sunday delivers Allan Harris and Tricia Giacommi, then Al Kitchen, with Triple Threat coming on after The Love and Marriage Show and races in the arena, as Robert Sampson gets down for the picnic windup at noon on Monday.
For a super Sunday treat, discover the incomparable Rogers & Nienhaus at Trails End in Curran or see Dueling Pianos with Aaron Lutzow and Lewis Knudsen tickle the ivories at Hill Prairie Winery near Oakford. Also longtime, central Illinois music man Michael Burnett invites you to a party celebrating his birthday at Danenberger Family Vineyard joined by Suns of Circumstance with special guest Johnnie Owens.
