The Springfield Area Arts Council is celebrating a successful start to the 2026 Artist in the Park at Food Truck Fridays season after welcoming nearly 200 attendees to the kickoff event on May 29. The organization invites the community to join them for the remaining nine weeks of free live entertainment in downtown Springfield.

Held at Union Square Park, 500 E. Madison Street, the opening performance featured Mike Anderson the Dulcimer Guy and brought together residents, downtown workers and visitors for an afternoon of live music, local food and community connection. The strong turnout reflects continued demand for free arts programming in downtown Springfield and sets the stage for an exciting summer season ahead.

A decades-old Springfield Area Arts Council program, Artist in the Park was revitalized in 2024 through a partnership with the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum and Downtown Springfield Inc. Today, the series serves as a weekly gathering place for residents and visitors to enjoy live performances by local and regional artists. Programming includes music, dance, poetry, storytelling and other artistic disciplines in a family-friendly, accessible and sensory-friendly environment.

“It was an honor to kick off the Artist in the Park season by sharing the mountain dulcimer and songs that reflect America’s rich musical heritage,” said Anderson. “The setting was wonderful, the audience was incredibly welcoming, and it was exciting to be part of a series that showcases so many talented artists throughout the summer.”

This year’s lineup was inspired by the upcoming America 250 commemoration and features performances that celebrate American musical traditions, storytelling, poetry and cultural influences. Through a diverse range of artists and art forms, the season celebrates the creativity that continues to shape communities across the country. Support from the city of Springfield through the Springfield Convention & Visitors Bureau has helped make this year’s season possible.

“We were thrilled to welcome nearly 200 people to our opening event,” said Bella Szabo, executive director of the Springfield Area Arts Council. “Artist in the Park has brought people together through the arts for more than four decades, and it was wonderful to see so many community members and visitors enjoying downtown Springfield. We look forward to building on that momentum throughout the summer.”

Artist in the Park at Food Truck Fridays takes place every Friday through July 31 at Union Square Park. Food trucks begin serving at 11 a.m., with performances taking place from 12 to 1 p.m.

In addition to providing free entertainment, the series supports the local arts economy by paying participating artists and creating opportunities for audiences to discover local talent. The event also encourages attendees to visit nearby restaurants and businesses, helping drive foot traffic and economic activity in downtown Springfield.
