A large, peaceful crowd at the Illinois State Capitol shouted that statement, which was also featured on numerous signs during the No Kings protest rally on Saturday, Oct. 18. Although storms were predicted, there was no rain at the protest rally promoting no reign.
Springfield was among more than 2,500 No Kings rallies planned across all 50 states to protest the actions of the Trump administration. People of all ages were present. The crowd filled the area around the Lincoln statue on the Capitol grounds, extended across Second Street by the Illinois State Library and State Supreme Court building and all along both sides of Second Street. Some who had attended the June rally noted that the current crowd was twice as large. Others were attending a protest for the first time.
Springfield’s No Kings protest rally was organized by Undivided and Focused, a local grassroots group whose Facebook page promotes “a way of being that is undivided by our differences, focused on restoring our shared humanity and our democracy.” Its stated purpose is “to protect the freedom that makes us neighbors, to practice empathy as the cornerstone of democracy and to live our First Amendment not only as a right, but as a responsibility to one another.”
Erin Van Brooker, a civil engineer who works for a consulting firm; Tara Bergschneider, a nurse; and Kristi Poole, a hospice aide, were the principal organizers of the Springfield event.
Bergschneider said she is devoted to serving people. She is a nurse, wife, mom and cancer survivor who believes in the importance of science.
“Loving people is what I do,” Bergschneider told Illinois Times. “My God tells me to lay my fears down and love people,” she said.

Signs at the No Kings protest ranged from serious to humorous. A group of people wearing inflatable dinosaur costumes marched through the area, holding signs that read: “T-Rex Against Tyrrany.” PHOTOS BY ZACH ADAMS
The program began with Eli Hewitt singing the national anthem and Rev. Martin Woulfe giving an invocation. Candidates for public office and activists were among the speakers.
The American flag was prevalent. “MAGA doesn’t own the American flag,” Springfield resident Virginia Scott told Illinois Times.
Retired nurse Lisa Henderson has lived her entire life in Springfield. She commented on the multi-generations in attendance and told Illinois Times she was proud of our city protesting peacefully and with so many generations turning out.

Thank you, thank you for documenting and stewarding this movement and it’s rawness, and it’s integrity!
You will be able to move on with your life during the rain of Queen Ivanka 11 years from now.
Long live the gentle rain of Queen Ivanka!!
All hail king Trump!
I would like to thank King Trump for being so benevolent in allowing the menopause militia to have a fun afternoon outside with their friends!
King Trump understands that it’s very important to let the peasants believe that they have a voice.
You’re the problem.
Hi Nichole Francis,
You’ve actually got 77 million problems, not just me.
Keep your chin up! Only 3 more years of melting down daily about King Trump. Then, only 8 years of melting down about King JD Vance. Maybe then, you will be able to move on with your life during the rain of Queen Ivanka 11 years from now.
Ivanka gonna make it rain on your parade
the rain
of Queen Ivanka
No Nichole, youre the problem!
I am so proud of our city, our community, and our state for standing up against the tyranny and letting our elected officials know that we see what they are doing and we won’t stand for it. This is what our country was founded on and no one has the power to control our government. It is by the people and for the people. Thank you Zach Adams for your incredible photos of this beautiful event.
I had to chuckle when I read the comment that said “proud of our city, our community, and our state for standing up against the tyranny and letting our elected officials know that we see what they are doing and we won’t stand for it.” Think about the irony in that statement, especially coming from a resident of ILLinois, where two recent governors, and now the man who was once the most powerful democrat in the state, were imprisoned for their crimes! Crimes by the way that at the time, nobody saw what they were doing, and nobody stood against it! Further, you have the 2nd worse governor in the country running Illinois into the ground thru his ridiculous taxations, his left-wing radical stance on illegal immigration, and his total lack of respect of law enforcement, and the law of the land. The No Kings protest is based on lies spread by mainstream media, which causes weak-minded people to react. There is no monarchy here, Trump is no King, and you know it. This is just what happens when spoiled children don’t get their way. See you all on July 4th, our country’s REAL No Kings day!
This is what America-hating communists look like. But your little hissy fit was cute. Thanks for identifying yourselves.
I said thanks for identifying yourselves. Thanks you. I’m not weird. Your weird.
