1939: Grandpa Dougan to Wisconsin grandkidsÂ
we drove 900 miles through mountains felt like
thousands up and down skirting around peaksÂ
saw some of the grandest scenery in valleys
hundreds of feet deep over ranges no two
alike great snow-capped spires evergreensÂ
up and down; narrow road only wide enough forÂ
one car going higher and higher if the least mishapÂ
down we’d plunge hundreds of feet we ran into a
dust storm I opened my door the wind snatched
my hat — it may have landed in some midwest
field so keep an eye out for it we stayed in a
cabin some boys next door dressed a dog inÂ
overalls added an old hat glasses and a pipeÂ
in its mouth – yes, we took pictures. love to allÂ
