Look out, Gov. Bruce Rauner is really mad now. He’s throwing hundreds of thousands of his own dollars at House Speaker Mike Madigan by means of a statewide TV ad campaign. “Mike Madigan and the politicians he controls refuse to change,” says the ad. “They’re saying ‘no’ to spending discipline, ‘no’ to job-creating economic reforms, ‘no’ to term limits. All they want is higher taxes – again.” Reports that Mike Madigan is trembling in his boots and will cave in to Rauner any minute are so far unconfirmed. But if the governor really wants to shake up the speaker he should buy newspaper ads, which appeal to thinking people. He could for once go beyond superficiality and half-truths to explain his positions. Heck, he could probably afford a full page. –Fletcher Farrar, editor and publisher
