Springfield City Council covered a lot in one night.

  • The city’s annual audit got a clean opinion. No material weaknesses. No significant control deficiencies. Good news, and a quick breakdown of what auditors checked:
  • Long-term pension costs raised eyebrows: projected shortfalls of about $310 million through FY41. The city expects to bring an ordinance soon, and officials say property taxes alone won’t cover it.
  • Public comment called out decorum — asking the mayor and alderpersons to treat speakers and colleagues consistently and respectfully.
  • A resident unveiled a community radio effort, with a new studio downtown and plans for 24/7 local news, events and citywide dialogue.
  • Another speaker pressed hard on records requests, complaint handling and police response times, citing Illinois law and urging changes.

If you care about the budget, pensions, how meetings are run, local media or police transparency, this one’s worth a watch.
