Harold Parkes

Harold H. Parkes, 100, passed away at 11:20 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 14, 2024 at his home.

He was born in Springfield, the son of James Russell and Mabel Kathryn (Fetzer) Parkes. Harold married Virginia Stoffels on Jan. 26, 1957 and she preceded him in death, Dec. 3, 2001. Also preceding him in death were his parents, a sister, Betty Anderson; two brothers, Richard and Delmer Parkes; and two sons, John and Paul Parkes.

Harold was a graduate of Pleasant Plains High School. He served his country during WW II in the U.S. Army. Returning to Pleasant Plains after his service, Harold worked tirelessly on the family farm.

He was a member of the Sangamon County Farm Bureau and served on the board of directors of Richland Elevator. He served on the board of directors for the Pleasant Plains State Bank and was a proud member of the American Legion. Harold was also a member of Zion Lutheran Church.

Surviving are his daughter, Beth Irwin of Pleasant Plains, and his son, Michael (wife Lara) Parkes of Springfield. There are six grandchildren: Michael (Adriana) Miller, Jeffrey Parkes, Owen (Emilie) Irwin, T. J. (Ashley) Parkes, Jonah Parkes and Virginia Parkes, and eight great-grandchildren.

The Parkes family will greet family and friends at Bisch Funeral Home West, 2931 S. Koke Mill Road in Springfield, on Thursday, Dec. 19, 2024 at 10:30 a.m. until the time of services at 1 p.m. Pastor Mary Ellen Sharp will officiate. Burial will follow in Farmington Cemetery, Farmingdale.

In lieu of flowers, those who wish may direct memorial contributions to the American Legion or the Land of Lincoln Honor Flight.
