Daniel Schull, 74, passed away peacefully Tuesday, May 13, 2025, while in hospice care at the Mary Bryant Home for the Blind and Visually Impaired in Springfield.
Dan had retired after working as an eligibility case worker for the Illinois Department of Human Services for 45 years. He was also union steward and a member of the Illinois Council of the Blind.
Dan insisted that love had been at the center of his life. Often, he spoke of his beloved wife Nancy whom he had married in 1976. They had one son, Dan Schull II.
One of the things that many will cherish about Dan was his proficiency at rhyme, mirth and song. He knew every Tom Lehr song by heart and could recite them off the top of his head.
He was one of the anchors of ALUUC’s trivia team – his command of facts relating to politics, history, languages and sports was exceptional.
Dan thoroughly enjoyed bowling – his room was crowded with awards and trophies, many of them presented by the Springfield Blind Bowlers Association.
In the weeks leading up to his death, his body had lost much of its vigor, but he accepted the arrival of death with grace. He had hoped that any organ that could be of use to someone else might be used for that purpose.
I asked Dan how he wanted to be remembered: someone who was loving, militant and generous was his reply. That is as fine an epithet as one could wish.
