Karen is missed very much, and her contributions to her community were many. Her kindness was extraordinary as well as her heart. Her knowledge of many topics and issues was amazing and her resources very broad. She could be tough yet compassionate, realistic but a visionary, and was committed to helping anyone in need, stranger or friend.
Her passions were her family and friendships, defending democracy, her faith and education: not just educating her students but the community as a whole. Her debating and writing skills were exemplary, and her determination to mentor anyone who needed it was part of who she was. I will miss our lively discussions on current issues and how to save the world. She will be remembered for being a lobbyist for career and technical education who was recognized by all Illinois legislators. Educating played a key role throughout her life.
She was always impeccably dressed and had the most infectious Irish grin, matched with a hardy laugh and quick wit. Karen had a strong mind and will. She overcame and adapted to many health issues and life challenges with grace and determination. I am a better person because of her friendship. She was one of a kind.
