The Leland Grove City Council unanimously approved hiring Kenton Oliver as the new Leland Grove chief of police at a March 24 meeting.
The six members of the City Council unanimously voted to terminate the previous police chief, Dan Ryan, retroactively effective Feb. 24. Ryan, whose license was suspended on March 23, is awaiting trial for DUI. He has also been charged with violating open container laws and improper lane usage along with failure to use a turn signal.
Mayor Mary Jo Bangert told Illinois Times after the meeting that she could not comment on the decision to terminate Ryan, due to his pending court case.
Oliver has worked for the Leland Grove Police Department since 2006, progressing from patrol officer to serving as deputy chief before his most recent promotion. Oliver will be paid $38.50 an hour in his new role, according to the meeting minutes.
After being sworn into his new position by Bangert, Oliver thanked the Leland Grove City Council.
“I know things have been rough lately, and I appreciate you guys supporting me. I haven’t had any bad input from anybody that I know of, or at least that’s come in my direction yet,” he said. “With that being said, I really appreciate everybody’s input. If you have anything for me, please reach out, but I just want to say thank you for believing in me.”
He told Illinois Times the Leland Grove Police Department has five full-time officers and 12 part-time officers. The primarily residential area in Woodside Township, adjacent to the southwest portions of Springfield city limits, has around 1,500 residents, according to Census Reporter.
